DIBRUGARH, May 3: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has stressed on the importance of the universities adopting futuristic, innovative and result-driven programmes instead of offering general conventional degrees.
He said this while gracing the 21st Convocation ceremony of Dibrugarh University as the chief guest on Wednesday.

Speaking of result-oriented programmes like skill development and entrepreneurship, he hailed the role of Dibrugarh University in imparting quality education to the students and making them well prepared to face the world of competition.
During the programme the Vice President presented the prestigious D Litt degree in absentia to noted litterateur Nirupama Borgohain and the DSc degree to climatologist Bhupendra Nath Goswami.
As many as 1,684 students were conferred their degrees during the convocation which include PhD degree to 75 students, M Phil degrees to 72 students. Gold medals were also awarded to 39 meritorious students.
The best graduates of science, arts and commerce were also awarded during the programme while the Jonali Kropi Memorial Gold Medal and Endowment Award was presented to the student securing the highest marks in the department of Anthropology.
“Dibrugarh University has been making rapid strides in the field of quality education. Dibrugarh University was one of the 75 institutions to be a part of the G20 University Connect programme,” the Vice President said.
According to him, India is the world’s most vibrant democracy and its image cannot be allowed to be tainted or tarnished by anyone.
‘‘When all is going well, why should some decry our democracy, talk outside as well as inside the country that we do not have democratic values? I dare say with confidence and without fear of contradictions, India is the most vibrant functional democracy on the planet on this date,’’ he said without naming anyone.
He urged the students that they must find a way out so that such ‘‘pernicious and sinister narratives are nipped in the bud’’.
Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, education minister Ranoj Pegu, Union MoS for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameswar Teli, Dibrugarh University Vice Chancellor Jiten Hazarika were among those present during the programme.
