DIBRUGARH, June 28: For the second consecutive day, Dibrugarh has been grappling with severe waterlogging. Important roads in Dibrugarh are waterlogged, causing significant inconvenience for the residents.
“Due to unscientific and faulty construction of drains, artificial flooding and waterlogging have become serious issues for the people of Dibrugarh. The Dibrugarh Town Protection (DTP) drain is the main drain designed to flush out the water from the town, but most of the drains in Dibrugarh remain clogged due to plastic and garbage. The drains should be clean, but the concerned department has failed to do so,” alleged a senior citizen of Dibrugarh.
He added, “This is not the first time. In 2015 and 2020, Dibrugarh faced similar waterlogging problems. The Mancotta road is one of the worst affected by waterlogging. We have already faced such problems, but this time it has happened again. In many areas, people are blocking the drain water by doing construction.”
Meanwhile, Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation mayor Dr Saikat Patra, along with workers from the DMC, has started cleaning the clogged drains. He has instructed the workers to ensure the drains are thoroughly cleaned.
Dibrugarh district commissioner Bikram Kairi convened an urgent meeting in the District Commissioner’s Office on Thursday to address the artificial flooding and waterlogging problem in Dibrugarh town.
Kairi thoroughly reviewed the artificial flooding situation in various parts of Dibrugarh and discussed the causes in detail. He emphasised the importance of regular cleaning of the city’s drains and gutters and highlighted the need for excavation of drains where necessary. Additionally, he called on the relevant departments to take all necessary steps to clear blocked culverts and to prevent the disposal of garbage in drains and gutters.
The meeting was attended by mayor of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Dr Saikat Patra, deputy mayor Ujjal Phukan, additional district commissioner Sanghamitra Barua, additional district commissioner Jintu Bora, additional district commissioner Ashim Borgohain, chairman of Dibrugarh Development Authority Ashim Hazarika, assistant commissioner Supriya Bawlari, Municipal Corporation executive officer Novas Das, executive officer (attached) Sukanya Mukherjee, and officials from the Public Works (Road) Department, Water Resources Department, Urban and Rural Planning Department, and Disaster Management Department, including the ward commissioners from all wards of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation.
