DIBRUGARH, Feb 16: Concerns over lack of fire safety measures at Shree Marwari Natya Samiti, a popular function hall and wedding venue located on Babulal Poddar Path, Dibrugarh have prompted urgent calls for action.
Kailash Bagaria, a local resident, brought the issue to light in an email dated January 16, addressed to the fire & emergency services directorate.
The email highlighted several critical shortcomings in fire safety compliance at the venue, which regularly hosts large-scale social gatherings and events.
In his email, Bagaria pointed out the absence of essential fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems.
He also noted the lack of clearly marked emergency exits and evacuation plans, as well as the frequent overcrowding during events.
“This negligence poses a severe threat to the safety and well-being of the public attending these events,” Bagaria wrote, urging immediate intervention from the authorities.
Following the complaint, a technical officer from the Fire & Emergency Services Directorate conducted an inspection of the premises.
The inspection revealed multiple shortcomings, which were communicated to the building authorities in a letter dated February 4.
The letter, signed by Bishnu Morang, Fire Prevention Officer (West), directed the management of Shree Marwari Natya Samiti to comply with the required fire safety measures and obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) through the state’s online portals, EODB or Sewa Setu.
The management of Shree Marwari Natya Samiti has been urged to install fire safety equipment, clearly mark emergency exits, and adhere to occupancy limits.
Additionally, they have been asked to coordinate with the fire department to ensure compliance with all safety norms.
Local residents have welcomed the intervention, expressing relief that the matter is being taken seriously.
“It’s a relief to see the authorities stepping in. This venue is often packed during events, and the lack of fire safety measures has always been a concern,” said a local resident.
