KOKRAJHAR, Dec 1: The two-day Winter Session of the Bodoland Territorial Council Legislative Assembly (BTCLA) commenced on Monday at BTCLA House, Bodofa Nwgwr, Kokrajhar, under the chairmanship of Speaker Tridip Daimary.
The session began with a question hour focused on welfare and development issues across the Bodoland region. During the proceedings, the council approved a supplementary budget of Rs 250 crore for the financial year 2025-26, provided by the state government.
Oath-taking ceremonies were held for the nominated MCLAs, administered by Speaker Daimary.
Meanwhile, allegations linking the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) to the recent vandalism inside the BTC Assembly during tribal students’ protests over the Assam government’s move to grant ST status to six communities were strongly denied. UPPL MCLA Daobaisa Boro described the incident as an emotional reaction by young generations regarding ST issues and called for a thorough investigation.
UPPL General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary echoed the denial, stating that the unrest was driven by students from the General-Z generation and emphasised the need for accountability in security lapses at the highly guarded Assembly and Secretariat premises. Narzary urged all individuals and groups to exercise their democratic rights peacefully, stressing that while protests are legitimate, peace must be maintained. He appealed to all parties to respect each other’s sentiments and prioritise coexistence, declaring, “Peace is non-negotiable. Please give peace a chance always.”
