Woman alleges dowry harassment and assault by in-laws in West Karbi Anglong

KHERONI, May 25: In a distressing case of domestic violence and dowry harassment, 27-year-old Dibya Singh, a resident of Mailoo village in West Karbi Anglong, has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Kheroni Police Station against her husband and his family members for allegedly assaulting her and demanding additional dowry.

Dibya Singh, who is currently undergoing treatment at HAMM Hospital in Hojai, sustained serious head injuries after allegedly being beaten with sticks by members of her husband’s family. According to the FIR, the assault was carried out by her mother-in-law Girija Devi, sister-in-law Anisa Singh, and another family member, Munni Devi.

Dibya was married to Sushil Singh, a TET-qualified teacher, in 2022. She claims that at the time of marriage, a two-wheeler and ₹4 lakh in cash were given as dowry. However, her in-laws later allegedly demanded an additional ₹1.5 lakh, leading to ongoing tensions and abuse.

This is not the first time Dibya Singh has faced violence from her in-laws. She had previously filed a complaint last year regarding physical abuse, which is still under investigation.

In the current FIR, Dibya Singh has named her husband Sushil Singh, along with Lalmohar Singh and Munni Devi, as accused. Police are yet to make an official statement on the progress of the investigation.

This case adds to the growing concern over dowry-related violence in the region, prompting renewed calls for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women from domestic abuse.
