Monday, October 14: The ropeway connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati at Kacharighat, one of the most scenic and efficient means of transport across the Brahmaputra River, will temporarily suspend operations from October 15 to 24, 2024. This announcement was made through a public notice issued by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), which oversees the operation and maintenance of the ropeway system. The closure has been planned for annual maintenance and a scheduled rescue mock drill to ensure the system’s safety and efficiency.
According to the GMDA’s notice, this is a routine procedure aimed at inspecting and maintaining the entire ropeway infrastructure to uphold the highest standards of safety for its passengers. The annual maintenance will involve thorough checks of the ropeway’s mechanical, electrical, and structural components to ensure they are in optimal condition. In addition to the maintenance work, a rescue mock drill will be conducted to prepare the staff for emergency scenarios, ensuring that all safety protocols are in place and can be executed efficiently should the need arise.
During this period, residents and visitors who rely on the ropeway for daily commutes or leisure trips will need to seek alternative transportation. The Guwahati-North Guwahati ropeway has been a popular choice for many, as it not only offers breathtaking views of the Brahmaputra River and the surrounding areas but also provides a quick and efficient mode of transport between the two sides of the river. The temporary suspension of services may cause some inconvenience, but GMDA officials emphasized the importance of regular maintenance to avoid any potential risks and ensure a smooth and safe experience for passengers once operations resume.
The ropeway, which spans approximately 1.82 kilometers, is the longest river ropeway in India and has been a key attraction since its inauguration. It has significantly reduced travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati, especially for those who want to avoid the heavy traffic on the Saraighat Bridge. The ropeway has become a symbol of modern infrastructure in the region, providing not only a practical solution for transportation but also a unique experience for tourists. Many visitors enjoy the panoramic views of the mighty Brahmaputra River, the Umananda Temple, and the lush green surroundings during the 8-10 minute journey.
While the ropeway’s closure may disappoint some tourists and daily commuters, the GMDA assured the public that the maintenance work and safety drills are crucial for ensuring the longevity of the system and the safety of its passengers. The public notice specifically mentioned that the ropeway would resume operations on October 25, 2024, following the successful completion of the maintenance and safety drills.
The rescue mock drill is a standard procedure for any ropeway system and is conducted to prepare the ropeway staff and emergency response teams for any unforeseen situations. In the event of an operational failure or an emergency during the ropeway’s functioning, the drill ensures that all necessary protocols are in place to safely evacuate passengers and manage the situation without causing harm. The drill also serves to evaluate the readiness of the equipment and the training level of the personnel in handling emergencies.
As a part of the mock drill, different scenarios will be simulated, such as sudden halts or power outages, and the staff will be required to carry out the evacuation process. The GMDA explained that these drills are essential for maintaining a high standard of safety and instilling confidence in the passengers who use the ropeway regularly.
Although the ropeway is primarily used as a convenient mode of transportation for locals traveling between Guwahati and North Guwahati, it has also gained popularity among tourists. The closure might disrupt some travel plans, particularly for those looking forward to experiencing the ride during the festive season, but it is seen as a necessary step to ensure the long-term functionality and safety of the system.
Local authorities have advised commuters to use alternative routes and transportation during the 10-day closure. The Saraighat Bridge remains the most viable option for crossing the Brahmaputra, although it is known for heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours. Ferry services across the river will also continue to operate, providing another alternative for travelers during the ropeway’s suspension.
In response to the closure, the GMDA has urged the public to remain patient and cooperate with the ongoing efforts to improve the safety and reliability of the ropeway system. They have reassured passengers that the maintenance process is being handled with the utmost care, and all necessary safety checks will be completed before the ropeway reopens for public use on October 25.
Once reopened, the Guwahati-North Guwahati ropeway is expected to resume its role as a vital link between the two cities, offering a safe, scenic, and efficient alternative to road travel. The successful completion of the maintenance and rescue drill will reinforce the GMDA’s commitment to passenger safety and operational excellence, ensuring that the ropeway continues to be a standout feature of Guwahati’s infrastructure.
