World Veterinary Day observed in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, April 27: AZAAN, a health care society of the state celebrated the ‘World Veterinary Day’ in a befitting manner at a function at Gauhati Press Club in the city on Saturday.

The theme of this year’s WVD is “Veterinarians are essential health workers”. In addition to helping animals, an essential part of the veterinary professionals are protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. Veterinarians’ competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large. The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being, but also to human’s physical, mental and social wellbeing.

World Veterinary Day is being celebrated worldwide every year on the last Saturday of April. Indian Veterinary Association has also decided to celebrate the WVD in a befitting manner to spread the message of ‘One World One Health’ in the society.

During the programme veterinary expert Dipannita Baishya deliberated on recent advances in the veterinary sector highlighting assisted reproductive technology (ART) through a power point presentation.

While Barnalee Saikia discussed the role of North Eastern Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (NERDDL), Bijuj Jahan Saleha Begum, organizer of this progamme spoke on the topic ‘Veterinarians are essential health workers’.

NK Bhattacharjee, a renowned cardiologist and president of the Heart Care Society of Assam, gave a presentation on ‘One World, One Health’. He discussed on control of zoonotic diseases and the role of veterinarians in health care. There was a lively interactive session where the panelists addressed various queries on animal health and care and its relation with human health and wellbeing of the society.

Sayed Afzal Ali, a Bollywood actor and well-wisher of AZZAN and Dayananda Pathak, a renowned professor and writer were also present on the occasion.
