Chennai, January 25: The Indian music industry mourns the loss of Bhavatharini, the daughter of legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, who passed away on January 25, 2024, at the age of 47.
Bhavatharini was not only the progeny of a musical titan but also a talented playback singer and music director in her own right. Her battle with cancer came to an end in Sri Lanka, where she was undergoing treatment.
Born on July 23, 1976, in Chennai, India, Bhavatharini grew up in a household steeped in music. She attended Rosary Matric School and Adarsh Vidyalaya for her schooling. Her career in music began as a playback singer with her debut in the film “Raasaiya,” and she quickly made a name for herself by lending her voice to songs composed by her father and brothers, as well as other composers like Deva and Sirpy.
Her talent was recognized with the prestigious National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2000 for the song “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu” from the film “Bharathi,” which was composed by her father. Bhavatharini’s foray into music direction began with the film “Mitr, My Friend” in 2002, and she continued to compose for various films, including “Phir Milenge” and “Vellachi.”
Bhavatharini’s personal life saw her married to R. Sabariraj, an advertising executive and son of former journalist S.N. Ramachandran. She leaves behind her husband and her two brothers, Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja, who are also renowned music composers.
As we reflect on Bhavatharini’s contributions to the world of Indian cinema and music, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and admirers. Her legacy will continue to live on through the melodies she created and the songs she sang, touching the hearts of many across generations.
