SHILLONG, Mar 22: In a heartbreaking incident in Karnataka, a food poisoning outbreak at a hostel has led to the tragic deaths of two students from Meghalaya and left 22 others hospitalized. Authorities have taken swift action, arresting six individuals in connection with the incident as investigations continue into the cause of the contamination.
The arrests were confirmed by Cyril VD Diengdoh, Commissioner and Secretary of the Home Department of the Meghalaya Government. Following directives from the Meghalaya government, Diengdoh visited the affected area in Mandya to assess the situation firsthand.
The Karnataka police, acting under Sections 286 and 106 of the Indian Penal Code, carried out the arrests at the Malavalli Rural Police Station.
Among those taken into custody are the cook of the restaurant that supplied the food, the restaurant owner, and several hostel staff members. Preliminary findings suggest that the contaminated dinner, sourced from the restaurant, was responsible for the outbreak.
In response to the devastating incident, the Meghalaya government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the families of the deceased students.
The affected students were admitted to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, where three were initially placed in the ICU due to severe health complications. As per the latest reports, one student remains in critical condition, while the others are in stable condition and receiving medical care.
The Mandya Child Welfare Committee officer is actively monitoring the case, ensuring that the hospitalized students receive proper medical attention and support.
Meanwhile, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event. Officials are committed to identifying lapses in food safety and preventing similar incidents in the future.
