Dimapur, Nov 20: Nine inmates from Mon district jail escaped in the wee hours on Saturday.
Mon SP T Uniel Kichu Ao told this correspondent on Sunday that the inmates escaped after Friday midnight at around 1 pm by scaling the back wall of the jail. He said three of the escapees are convicts while six others are undertrials. The three convicts were imprisoned in theft cases while one of the undertrials is facing trial in murder case, one in Arms Act case and the rest in theft cases, he said.
“We have alerted and mobilised all our resources in the State, especially in Mon district, to apprehend the escapees,” Ao said. He said none of the escapees was from any underground faction.
On how the prisoners managed to escape, the SP said, “We are investigating and even the jail department is doing their own inquiry.” He said those responsible will be taken to task.
Ao said some officers from the Police department the State capital Kohima also reached Mon late Saturday afternoon.
“We are trying our best to apprehend the escapees,” the SP said.
“We have our own sources, we have contacted village councils and village guards and also taking help of the Assam Rifles,” he added.
It is learnt that Nagaland DGP (prisons, home guard and civil defence) Rupin Sharma has sent one of his officers to Mon on Sunday. The officer was asked to report to him on the incident on Monday, sources said.
