ITANAGAR, May 2: Arunachal Pradesh’s Governor, Lt. General KT Parnaik (PVSM, UYSM, YSM, Retd.), chaired a crucial meeting at Raj Bhavan in Itanagar on May 2, 2025, to review the security situation in the state.

According to an official statement, the meeting saw a comprehensive briefing on key security matters from State Home Minister Mama Natung, Additional Director General of Police Shri Vivek Kishore, and Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Chukhu Apa.

The discussion covered a wide range of security concerns, including the progress of the ongoing border fencing project along the Indo-Myanmar border, the functioning of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, and other critical internal security matters facing the state.

The meeting focused on how these issues are intertwined with the strategic, socio-economic, and security interests of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly given the state’s sensitive geopolitical location.

The Governor underscored the significance of border fencing as an essential component of the state’s security infrastructure.

Highlighting the state’s location along a volatile international border, Lt. General Parnaik emphasised that the completion of the border fencing would not only enhance security but also contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the region.

He noted that robust fencing, when combined with designated crossing points, would serve as a strong deterrent to illegal infiltration, arms smuggling, drug trafficking, and insurgent movements across the border.

Governor Parnaik reiterated that the border fencing would be a crucial tool in ensuring a more secure and stable environment in the region.

He expressed that such measures would help protect the state’s territorial integrity, while also fostering better governance and socio-economic development in the border areas.

The Governor’s remarks underscored the strategic importance of this project, which he believes will help enhance both the physical security and the well-being of the communities living near the border.

Further elaborating on the state’s internal security measures, the Governor called for strengthening the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, a critical mechanism for regulating the entry of non-residents into Arunachal Pradesh.

Describing the ILP as a vital safeguard for the state, he emphasized that it plays a significant role in preserving the demographic balance and cultural identity of the indigenous communities.

The ILP system, according to the Governor, is not just an administrative tool but a key factor in maintaining law and order, as it helps in monitoring and tracking visitors who enter the state.

Governor Parnaik also noted that the ILP system has helped ensure that the rights and cultural heritage of the local population remain protected amidst increasing external migration pressures.

He stressed the importance of continuing to strengthen this mechanism, which he believes is vital for the long-term stability of the state.

In addition to these discussions, the Governor and state officials reviewed the current status of the state’s surrender policy.

This policy, aimed at rehabilitating insurgents and bringing them into the mainstream, has been a key part of the state’s efforts to maintain internal peace.

The Governor expressed satisfaction with the progress made in this area but stressed that the state must continue to refine its approach to ensure that the policy remains effective in addressing the challenges posed by insurgency.

The Governor also took the opportunity to praise the efforts of the state police in maintaining law and order in Arunachal Pradesh.

He commended the police force for their diligence and proactive approach to ensuring peace, especially in the face of ongoing security challenges.

At the same time, Lt. General Parnaik urged the police and security agencies to remain vigilant and to continue their efforts in addressing any security gaps.

During the meeting, the Governor emphasized the need for continued collaboration between state and central authorities to ensure that the state’s security apparatus remains equipped to handle any emerging threats.

He expressed confidence in the state’s ability to overcome its security challenges with a sustained and collaborative approach.

In conclusion, the Governor reiterated his call for ongoing vigilance and proactive security measures to maintain peace and ensure sustainable development in Arunachal Pradesh.

He emphasized that a secure and peaceful environment is essential for the state’s growth and for enhancing the quality of life of its residents.
