Imphal, April 20: Following the turmoil and disruptions witnessed during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in Manipur, the Chief Electoral Officer has issued a directive for fresh voting to take place in six polling stations located within the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.
Ramananda Nongmeikapam, serving as the Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur, has officially communicated this request to the Election Commission of India. The decision has been prompted by the tumultuous events that unfolded during the recent elections, raising serious concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
Numerous disturbances were reported from various polling stations, including Moirangkampu Sajeb Upper Primary School, Khongman Zone, and Iroisemba Upper Primary School.
These incidents were characterized by mob violence and the deliberate destruction of voting equipment, necessitating a reevaluation of the entire electoral procedure. Furthermore, at Khaidem Makha, the voting process encountered significant disruptions as unidentified individuals forcibly participated in voting, resulting in widespread unrest in the vicinity.
In response to these alarming developments, action has been set in motion in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The Election Commission of India has been urged to provide further guidance on addressing the issues stemming from these incidents, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for swift and decisive action to uphold the democratic principles of fair and free elections.
