IMPHAL, Oct 11: Truckers’ bodies in Manipur on Monday drew the attention of the Manipur government to approach the Nagaland government to relax the restriction which is to be imposed on plying of heavy trucks along NH-2 in Nagaland for a month, considering the upcoming Ningol Chakouba festival.
The Ningol Chakouba, one of the biggest festivals of Manipur, falls on October 27.
The Nagaland government, in a recent order, announced restriction to the movement of heavy trucks of 10 wheels and above along the NH-2 between Dimapur and Khuzuma for a month with effect from October 13 in connection with railway line construction, according to the truckers’ organisations.
Addressing a press conference in Imphal on Monday, leaders of the Manipur Drivers’ Association (MDA), Senapati Drivers’ Association (SDA) and Senapati Truck Owners’ Association (STOA) urged the Manipur government to approach the Nagaland government to relax the same considering the upcoming Ningol Chakouba festival.
MDA general secretary, Kh Sanjoy Singh said that considering the upcoming important festival, the Manipur government should take up the matter with the Nagaland government.
He observed that the restriction to the movement of the heavy trucks will affect the import of essential commodities into the state through this highway.
The restriction will likely create an artificial scarcity of essential commodities, he said.
He requested the Manipur government to request the Nagaland government to review the restriction order and impose the same after the festival. (NNN)
