The chief minister said this while inaugurating the Pondage Multipurpose Reservoir during a function organized at Mawrah on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Sangma said that the multipurpose water reservoir has been created from a wasteland by the state soil and water conservation department. The project could take shape in just two years because of the support by locals and efforts of the officials of the department.

The Pondage Multipurpose Reservoir in Mawrah has been created in 6.5 hectares of wasteland at a cost of Rs 1.5 crores. Currently, locals in collaboration with government officials are engaged in planting trees along the catchment area together with activities aimed with recharging the ground water of the area.

“Inaugurated the Mawrah Multipurpose Water Reservoir under the Sohra Civil Subdivision. In just 2 years, with community support and commendable efforts by the Soil & Water Conservation Department, the area is now transformed to a beautiful water body which was revived from a wasteland. The reservoir is also supporting the water needs of surrounding villages,” CM Sangma said on ‘X’.

“At present measures such as afforestation on the catchment, ground water recharge and other activities are being carried forward, giving a facelift to the area,” he further said on ‘X’.

The Meghalaya state government had joined hands with the Asian Development Bank in 2022 to create 1000 such Pondage Multipurpose Reservoirs across the state to generate water-based livelihoods and boost the tourism sector in the state.

“The Mawrah Multipurpose Water Reservoir constructed under the RIDF XXVI scheme of @NABARDOnline with funding support from the State Scheme to complete the project has become a successful Model Water Conservation Effort of the Government. Congratulate the community and the team for their outstanding work in transforming the area,” Sangma also said on ‘X’.
