SHILLONG, JULY 25: A Meghalaya South West Garo Hills district worker has been convicted and sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment for trying to rape and molest a woman. The verdict was pronounced by the Special Judge (POCSO) Court in the district on June 19, 2025.
The case belongs to April 14, 2015, when the Mahendraganj Police Station received a written complaint by a woman that Muslim Miah, who was a labourer employed for construction work at her home, had followed her, grabbed her hand and tried to molest and rape her. On the basis of this complaint, police made a case under Section 8 of the POCSO Act, 2012, and initiated an immediate inquiry.
The case was investigated by WPSI Bernadeth K Sangma, who charged the case on April 29, 2015. After a protracted trial process, Muslim Miah was held guilty of the crime under the POCSO Act by the court. The conviction reflects the judiciary’s determination to safeguard victims of sexual violence.
The court imposed three years of rigorous imprisonment on the convict and fined him ₹2,000. In default of payment of the fine, Miah would undergo a further one month’s simple imprisonment.
The Superintendent of Police, Vikash Varma, released an official press release on 24 July 2025, calling upon the media to make known the case information in order to bring public awareness and reiterate the message that this kind of crime won’t be let go unpunished.
