Miscreants Plant Hand Grenade In Imphal East

IMPHAL, Nov 12: At a time when security forces are conducting combing operations to recover arms and ammunition looted during the violence, some miscreants planted a hand grenade at the gate of an individual in Imphal East district on Sunday.

As per police, the miscreants planted the hand grenade at the gate of the residence of Sapamcha Kangleipal who contested the last assembly elections from Lamlai constituency of Imphal East as an independent candidate.

Family members found the hand grenade wrapped with papers near the gate at around 6 am.

On being informed, a team of Lamlai police rushed to the spot and took up precautionary measures before calling out personnel of the state police detection and disposal squad.

The bomb experts defused the grenade safely, the police also said.

During initial investigation, it was found that the hand grenade was among the several explosives which were looted from the Manipur Police Training College (MPTC); Pangei in Imphal East district at the initial stage of the ethnic violence erupted in the state on May 3 last.

Notably, the grenade was recovered amid the combing operations being conducted by the police and security forces to recover the looted arms and ammunition from the armouries of the state police and security posts during the violence.

A total of 5,668 arms along with ammunition and a large number of explosives were looted during the initial stage of the violence.

Of this, security forces have so far recovered over 1,329 arms and 15,050 rounds of ammunition till the middle week of September. They also recovered 900 bombs. (NNN)
