SHILLONG, May 13: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) has reiterated its demand for the Meghalaya state government to enforce stricter controls on access to “pornographic content” to protect young women or girls from rising sexual abuse in Meghalaya.

Submitting a reminder letter to the chief minister Conrad K Sangma today, MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla said, “We respectfully urge the state government to take concrete steps to

enforce stricter controls on access to pornographic content, especially on mobile and digital platforms, and to introduce state-level digital safety campaigns in schools and communities, and also to work with law enforcement to monitor and take swift action against the spread of such harmful content, and to promote awareness programs to educate both youth and parents on the psychological and social consequences of pornography.”

She said the MPMC believes that the increasing exposure and consumption of pornographic content is directly contributing to the alarming rise in cases of sexual abuse against young women and girls, particularly by young and underage boys.

“Day by day, we are witnessing a disturbing trend where minors are engaging in harmful and inappropriate behavior, often influenced by the easy availability of explicit material online. This not only endangers the safety and dignity of girls across the state but also reflects a moral crisis that must be addressed collectively and immediately,” Shylla stated.

She also said that timely and effective intervention can help prevent further damage to “the social fabric of our society and ensure a safer environment for our children—especially our girls”.

“We hope the government will take immediate steps to address this matter and we, as a women’s wing of the Congress party, are committed to supporting any efforts in this direction,”she stated further in the letter. (NNN)
