MSCW takes suo moto cognizance of young girl’s murder

SHILLONG, July 20: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) has taken suo moto cognizance of the recent murder of a young girl in Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.

In a statement the MSWC said, “We are deeply disturbed by the suffering endured by the victim and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family. Such egregious acts of violence are intolerable and represent a direct attack on the values of humanity and justice that our society upholds.”

The Commission asserted that the perpetrator of this inhuman act must be apprehended without delay and brought to justice through the strongest provisions of the law.

“We request the Meghalaya Police and all concerned authorities to prioritise the investigation, ensure transparency, and provide regular updates to the public,” it said while urging local communities, civil society, and concerned citizens to cooperate fully with investigative agencies to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly.

“Recognising the gravity and urgency of the situation, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women is taking suo moto cognizance of the case. The Commission will independently monitor the progress of the investigation,” the MSWC said.

The Commission also assures to intervene, if required, to ensure the victim’s family receives all necessary support and assistance.

It will work with government agencies to strengthen the protective and preventive mechanisms for children and women in the region.

The Commission also reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and holding the perpetrator accountable.

“We remain steadfast in our efforts to enhance the safety, dignity, and welfare of all women and children in Meghalaya. The Meghalaya State Commission for Women stands with the family of the victim and the community of Williamnagar in this moment of immense tragedy. Justice must prevail; the safety and dignity of every girl and woman is our shared responsibility,” it stated further. (NNN)
