GUWAHATI, Jan 23: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is continuing construction work on the strategically significant Dimapur (Dhansiri)–Kohima (Zubza) new railway line project, which will, for the first time, connect Nagaland’s capital city with the national railway network.
Spanning a total length of 78.42 km, the project passes through Karbi Anglong district in Assam and Chumukedima and Kohima districts in Nagaland.
The alignment includes eight stations—Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvom, Pherima, Piphema, Menguzuma and Zubza.
Of these, Dhansiri, Shokhuvi and Molvom stations have already been completed.
The project involves challenging engineering works, including the construction of 20 tunnels with a combined length of 31,169 metres, 27 major bridges and 149 minor bridges, with substantial portions of these structures already in place.
The line has been commissioned in phases so far.
The Dhansiri–Shokhuvi section, measuring 16.5 km, was commissioned in October 2021, followed by the Shokhuvi–Molvom section of 14.64 km in March 2025.
Regular train services are currently operating from Shokhuvi, connecting it with Guwahati in Assam and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh, providing passengers with safer, smoother and more reliable travel options.
With the commissioning of Molvom station, it has become the third major railway station in Nagaland and began handling freight operations in September 2025.
Once fully completed, the Dimapur–Kohima rail link is expected to significantly enhance access to education, healthcare, employment and markets, while reducing reliance on road transport by offering a comfortable, affordable and time-efficient travel alternative.
NFR has set a target to complete the remaining sections of the project by 2029, a milestone that is expected to play a key role in boosting connectivity and overall development in the region.
