AGARTALA, June 17: The Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday staged a protest demonstration outside the office of the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala, condemning the recent vandalism of Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Bangladesh.

Over 200 BJP leaders and workers, led by Tripura BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, took out a rally from the North Gate of Agartala city to the Bangladesh mission, raising slogans and expressing strong disapproval of the incident.

Tripura, which shares an 856 km long international border with Bangladesh, has witnessed growing concerns over the safety of minorities in the neighbouring country.

Speaking to reporters, Bhattacharya termed the attack on Tagore’s ancestral property a “cruel act” and said it reflected the deteriorating condition of religious and cultural tolerance in Bangladesh under the current interim government.

“Since the formation of the interim government in Bangladesh, minorities—especially Hindus—have been under continuous threat. Temples are being attacked, priests are being targeted, and now the ancestral home of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore has been ransacked. Is this democracy or dictatorship?” he questioned.

Bhattacharya also slammed the interim administration led by Mohammad Yunus for remaining silent on the matter and not taking any visible action.

“They know how to destroy property and kill people, but cannot protect heritage or ensure justice. India will not accept such atrocities. Our protest today is a strong message,” he said.

The BJP leadership demanded a prompt response from the Bangladesh government, including arrests of those responsible, and urged New Delhi to raise the matter diplomatically.
