AGARTALA, Nov 21: Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Ashish Kumar Saha has called for urgent intervention by the chief secretary of Tripura, Jitendra Kumar Sinha, to provide relief and support to those affected by recent floods and incidents of communal violence across the state.
In a letter addressed to the chief secretary, Saha highlighted the grave situation caused by the floods, which have claimed nearly 30 lives and displaced countless others.

“Lakhs of people have lost their homes and belongings, but the state government’s rehabilitation efforts remain inadequate. The TPCC has demanded that the recent floods be declared a national disaster, but the government has shown reluctance,” Saha wrote. He urged the chief secretary to remind the Chief Minister of his promises to provide relief to the flood victims and fulfill the state’s responsibilities towards its people.
Turning his attention to communal tensions, Saha pointed out the deteriorating situation in Gandacherra under the Dhalai District, where tribal and non-tribal communities have been deeply divided.
“Hundreds of people have been rendered homeless due to the breakdown of harmony. The state administration has failed to maintain law and order, and distrust continues to prevail. The Home Department has yet to take effective steps to restore peace and harmony in the affected areas,” he added.
Saha also drew attention to incidents of violence between religious groups in Kadamtala (Dharmanagar Sub-Division) and Kaitaraibari (Jirania Sub-Division). These clashes have led to significant destruction of homes and shops, forcing hundreds into relief camps. “The victims have been left without any relief or financial assistance from the government, compounding their suffering,” he noted.
The Congress leader demanded adequate compensation for the affected families, as well as employment for the wives of those who lost their lives in the violence. “Given the dire circumstances prevailing across the state, I urge your immediate intervention to alleviate the suffering of innocent people and help them rebuild their lives,” Saha stated.
The TPCC president’s letter underscores the growing discontent among the affected communities and the urgency for swift governmental action to address their plight.
