Speaking on the matter on Thursday, Sadar Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Debaprasad Roy said that the police from West Agartala Police Station and Ramnagar Outpost seized 100 grams of brown sugar based on a tip-off.
“Acting on information regarding drug trafficking, the police, in plain clothes, rushed to the Tripura Road Transportation Corporation (TRTC) office at Barjala. Upon arrival at the scene, we detained the suspect. After conducting a thorough search, we seized nine pouches of brown sugar weighing 100 grams. The market value is estimated at around Rs 8 lakh,” he stated.
The SDPO added that the accused, identified as Rajib Datta, is a resident of Kamalasagar in Sepahijala District.
“We will produce him in court and seek police remand for further interrogation,” he added.
In another operation, Tripura Police seized a large cache of banned cough syrups worth Rs 12 lakh from an abandoned room inside the Khakchang Residential Complex in the Nandan Nagar area, on the outskirts of Agartala, late Wednesday night.
Speaking on the issue, New Capital Complex Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Subrata Barman said that locals living in the Khakchang Residential Complex observed some individuals unloading sacks into the abandoned room, which was previously used to store construction materials.
“We received information that an abandoned room, which was used to store construction items, had been accessed. On Wednesday evening, two individuals arrived in a vehicle and unloaded some sacks. The locals noticed this and, finding it suspicious, informed the police. When we arrived and started verifying the contents, we found banned cough syrups—35 sacks in total,” he said.
The SDPO added that around 5,000 bottles of cough syrup were seized.
