GUWAHATI, June 5: In observance of World Environment Day 2025, the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) launched a series of initiatives promoting environmental sustainability through tree plantation drives and a strong pledge against plastic use on Thursday.

According to an official statement, the events were designed to align with this year’s global theme, “Ending Global Plastic Pollution.”

USTM led an extensive awareness campaign titled “Embracing a Plastic-Free Pledge for a Sustainable Environment,” urging individuals to take personal responsibility for environmental conservation beyond relying solely on governments or institutions.

Dr R K Sharma, Principal of IA Ayurvedic Medical College, addressed a rally at the USTM campus, emphasising the dangers of pollution and the importance of afforestation.

Students and faculty joined the campaign with visible enthusiasm, highlighting the collective spirit of the initiative.

On the eve of World Environment Day, the Department of Botany hosted a plantation event titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” in the presence of Vice Chancellor G D Sharma.

In another effort, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the NSS Cell of USTM jointly organised a tree-planting drive at Savio Higher Secondary School in Baridua, Ri Bhoi district, promoting the vision of a greener, plastic-free campus.

In a significant outreach program held on June 4 at Jorbil Village, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Physics distributed saplings to local residents under the theme “Green Earth, Clean Future: Sow the Seeds of Sustainability.”

The initiative aimed to raise awareness about deforestation and ecological balance while encouraging direct community involvement in afforestation efforts.

Meanwhile, the Department of Chemistry marked the occasion with a community awareness drive focused on the perils of plastic pollution and the importance of adopting sustainable practices.
