New Delhi, May 23: Dinesh Karthik, a key player for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has concluded his distinguished career in the Indian Premier League (IPL) following a defeat in the recent Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday.
Karthik, who had hinted at his retirement earlier in the season, received a heartfelt send-off from his teammates. They honored him with a guard of honour after the match in Ahmedabad. Although Karthik himself did not officially announce his retirement, the league’s broadcaster confirmed the news through a social media post shortly after the match.
Karthik’s career in the IPL spans an impressive 16 years, marked by his exceptional finishing skills. Jio Cinema, the IPL’s digital broadcaster, paid tribute to Karthik, acknowledging his significant contributions to both RCB and the league.
During his farewell, Karthik removed his gloves and acknowledged the fans, with RCB players expressing their gratitude to the supporters around the stadium. A poignant moment occurred when team captain Virat Kohli embraced Karthik, visibly moved by the occasion. As Karthik made his way to the dressing room, his teammates lined up to honor him, marking the end of an era for the veteran player.
Karthik’s IPL career is illustrious, with a record of 4,842 runs in 257 matches, including 22 fifties. Over his 17-year career, he represented six franchises in the league, showcasing his resilience and excellence.
From his debut with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the inaugural 2008 season, Karthik played for Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, Kolkata Knight Riders, and finally RCB. In his final season, he accumulated 326 runs in 15 matches, averaging 36.22 with a striking strike rate of 187.36.
