MARGHERITA, Sept 3: Gauri Das, a senior citizen at the age of about 68 years, found herself in an unexpected situation when Shivan Goswami, the subdivisional electricity engineer of Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) in the Margherita Electrical Subdivision, abruptly disconnected the power supply to her home. This incident occurred despite prior commitments made regarding the payment of electricity bill dues.
Sumit Chakraborty, a concerned neighbour, shared that Gauri Das is a permanent resident of Ward number 8, Ananda Para, Margherita, in the Tinsukia district of Assam. She is battling several health issues, including high blood pressure, thyroid, diabetes, and gastric problems. Additionally, she recently underwent gallbladder surgery at Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital. Shockingly, the APDCL staff disconnected her power supply without any prior notice on a Tuesday evening while Gauri Das was asleep.
Gauri Das explained her predicament, stating that although her house in Dibrugarh remains locked, she is obligated to pay monthly electricity bills ranging from Rs 2500 to Rs 3000. However, this time, she received a bill amounting to Rs 7278. She discussed this substantial bill with Shivan Goswami, who agreed to allow her to pay it in two instalments. To her dismay, on August 30, APDCL Margherita staff suddenly arrived and disconnected her power supply. This unexpected turn of events has left Gauri Das struggling with suffocation due to the lack of electricity in her house.
It is worth noting that the citizens of Margherita are grappling with two major issues – exorbitant electricity bills and frequent power outages enforced by the APDCL Margherita Electrical Subdivision.
