Guwahati, The Shiksha Setu portal has highlighted an alarming trend witnessed in government and provincialiszed schools that could put a big question mark on Assam government’s efforts to develop the state’s education system.
Poor and inconsistent student attendance has been highlighted in the portal which showed data for 44,507 schools across the state. The portal also reflected a total of 48,42,383 stuednts with 94 per cent or 45,63,854 students enrolled in this school.
Massive student discrepancy have been witnessed in Karbi Anglong, Udalguri, Barpeta, Baksa, Sivasagar, Morigaon, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Karimganj, Charaideo, South Salmara-Mankachar, Tinsukia and Udalguri.
In contrast, districts like Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Darrang, Nagaon, Biswanath, and Dibrugarh have shown better student attendance figures. Even Kamrup (M) and Kamrup districts have struggled with unsatisfactory attendance.
According to the portal’s data, student attendance was just 48% on September 20, followed by 51% on September 21 and 56% on September 22. Despite a minor improvement to 62.1 percent attendance on September 28, more than one-third of kids were missing.
Surprisingly, districts that perform well in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary (HS) examinations have higher student attendance. One of the key causes contributing to low attendance is the state’s continually high dropout rate.
This has been a regular topic of discussion at Project Approval Board (PAB) meetings, where the Centre has urged the State School Education Department to reduce the dropout rate.
