BISWANATH CHARIALI, Nov 6: Recent reports reveal a growing challenge facing the southern region of Sootea, as illegal timber traders and forest smugglers persist in cutting down mature and valuable saplings on government land. Despite the state government’s efforts, such as the Amrit Brikhya Andolan, to preserve the natural environment, forest smugglers are disregarding these measures and continue their unauthorized tree cutting activities, particularly in the Bohorabheti area.
The role of the forest department in addressing this issue has come under scrutiny. As per reports, the southern part of Sootea has seen the installation of several illegal sawmills, amplifying the problem of illegal timber trading.
Responding to local intelligence, a team of foresters from Biswanath took action, seizing two illegal sawmills and a substantial amount of timber in the southern Sootea region. However, the dealers involved in this illegal activity managed to escape. Allegations have been raised by local residents, implicating one Amir Hussain from the Buduaati area as a leader involved in the forest loss mission.
Residents are expressing deep concerns over the unabated illegal tree cutting activities, fearing that if left unchecked, the southern Sootea region could soon face the peril of turning into a desert.
