GUWAHATI, Dec 28: The eagerly awaited 14th edition of the Chandubi Festival is scheduled to kick off in Kamrup district on January 1, extending through January 5. This annual festival has become a significant event, drawing thousands of tourists to celebrate the cultural diversity and natural beauty of the region.
Organised by the All Rabha Students Union, Borduar Bholagaon Anchalik Committee, in collaboration with various Rabha organisations, the festival serves the dual purpose of raising awareness about the preservation of Chandubi Lake and promoting it as a prominent tourist destination.
The festival is expected to feature a five-day program showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Rabha and other tribes, attracting not only locals but also tourists from across the state and beyond. A highlight of the event is a vibrant cultural procession reflecting the diverse traditions of the Rabha and other tribes in the state.
For the past 13 years, the Chandubi Festival has been a major draw, offering a platform to showcase local folk culture, ethnic cuisine, traditional handloom and attire, boating activities, and more. The festival spotlights the scenic beauty of Chandubi Lake, a freshwater lake created during a significant earthquake in 1897, now serving as an economically viable water body supporting the communities around it.
In a recent ceremony, the Lai Khuta (foundation pole) of the Chandubi Festival was laid by Debajit Napha, the magazine secretary of Nikhil Rabha Students Union (NRSU), in the presence of an enthusiastic audience. The festival aims to promote eco-tourism in this biodiversity hotspot of the state, contributing to the region’s cultural and economic growth.
