DIBRUGARH, Feb 16: Renowned Padma Shri awardee, Kiran Seth, the visionary behind SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth), embarked on a meaningful journey to Dibrugarh, where he engaged with students and educators to kindle interest in Indian classical music and cultural heritage.
For Seth, Dibrugarh held profound significance, as it was not just a visit but a nostalgic return to his childhood roots. His father, BR Seth, had served as the inaugural vice chancellor of Dibrugarh University in 1966. Paying homage to his father’s legacy, Seth revisited the old bungalow at Dibrugarh University, imbued with memories of his formative years.
During his stay on Friday, Seth graced the Delhi Public School and the Shree Bharati Institute of Professional Education, exchanging insights with students and faculty members. The day culminated in an open dialogue session at Dibrugarh University, where ideas on cultural preservation and youth engagement flourished.
On Saturday, Seth is slated to convene with esteemed patrons of SPIC MACAY’s Dibrugarh chapter, followed by an organisational gathering with members of the Heritage Club at Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi (DHSK) College. The itinerary extends to February 18, featuring engagements at the Dibrugarh Sattriya Sanskritik Kendra and JN Vidyalaya in Moran.
In a conversation with the press, Dr Seth said, “We have been organising programs nationwide to promote interest in Indian heritage amongst youth. By 2030, SPIC MACAY hopes to reach out to every child of this nation and promote Indian heritage. We need a movement to change society, and for that, we need the support of the young generation. We need to know the basic things which we have forgotten. The young generation should play a proactive role in changing society.”
He added, “Indian classical music is being looked upon as a way to perform on stage. Through SPIC MACAY, we want children to touch the soul of Indian classical music. Once they identify with the soul, there is nothing that will stop them from becoming human beings who can never go wrong.”
