IMPHAL, March 20: Sleuth of the anti-smuggling unit of the Imphal customs division have arrested two alleged drug peddlers and seized three kg of brown sugar worth over Rs 15 crore in the international market.
The arrested persons were identified as Abdul Rahaman (42) of Imphal East district and Md Feijuddin (38) of Thoubal district, an official statement said on Tuesday.
They were arrested along with the contraband drugs from Kongba Kshetri Leikai near Standard College in Imphal East during an operation that was conducted at 3.30pm on March 18, an official statement of the Imphal customs division said.
It said that the officers of the division intercepted the two individuals, which led to the seizure of three kg of brownish powder suspected to be brown sugar, the official statement released by deputy commissioner Rajiv Kumar Yengkhom of customs division, Imphal.
The drugs packed in three packets were formally seized from their possession on the same day at about 4.30 pm. A case was also registered against the drug peddlers. They were charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The estimated value of the seized contraband in the international market is said to be Rs 15 crore.
Further, investigation is underway to nab the other offender(s) of the case.
