GOSSAIGAON, June 13: In a major breakthrough, Fakiragram Police managed to nab four notorious thieves from Bilasipara involved in the theft at various temples in the Assam-Bengal border area of lower Assam, including the Maa Mahamaya temple in Kachugaon under Kachugaon Police Station recently.
Based on a speedy investigation conducted by the police into case no 12/24 lodged at Kachugaon Police Station in connection with the theft at Maa Mahamaya temple on the intervening night of May 26, the Fakiragram Police raided a luxury vehicle and successfully nabbed four notorious thieves involved in theft cases and recovered looted ornaments from their possession.
It was disclosed that a team of police personnel led by Hiren Kumar, in association with SP Kokrajhar, additional superintendent of police, Crime Branch, and Fakiragram, arrested five persons along with the stolen items from the temple on Wednesday night.
The four suspected thieves have been identified as Mandal Ali, Sharif Uddin, Hazrat Ali, and Ashraful Ali, hailing from Mayarchar under Bilasipara sub-division in Dhubri district. The police also nabbed Maqbool Hasan, who bought the stolen items from the temples.
Police sources revealed that three silver crowns worn by the deity, a gold piece weighing around 15 grams, ornaments and silver weighing 900 grams were recovered from the gang of notorious thieves who had executed the insane act at the temples of various places, including the recently looted Maa Mahamaya temple in Kachugaon.
Police have also seized a copper bowl from the gang of thieves, a gas cutter and iron cutter used in the theft, five mobile phones, and a Swift Dzire vehicle used in the robbery.
