DEMOW, June 20: Under the patronage of the All Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA), the Demow branch, in association with the Athabari sub-branch, tea labourers, and local people, blocked the road connecting Demow to Athabari on Thursday morning. This protest was against the poor condition of the road. Heavy vehicles frequently travel on this road, causing big potholes that create serious problems for pedestrians and students. Moreover, there are several offices and educational institutions along this road. The protesters shouted slogans demanding that the road be repaired at the earliest.

The Demow circle officer, PWD officials, and a representative of Oil India Limited reached the protest area on Thursday. Biswanath Nag, secretary of the All Tea Tribes Students Association, Demow branch, stated that since 2019, when Oil India Limited arrived at Athabari Tea Estate, ATTSA has demanded repairs for this road. He mentioned that they had several discussions with Oil India Limited, and the company informed ATTSA that funds had been released to the PWD Department for construction. Despite informing the PWD Department and district administration about the issue, it is now 2024, and no one has taken responsibility for the road’s construction, which is very disappointing.

Biswanath Nag informed this correspondent on Thursday that the protesters have given only one day for the road to be constructed. He warned that if the road is not repaired, they will block it for an indefinite period. He also mentioned that Oil India Limited had assured them that the road would be constructed by tomorrow.

Present at the protest were Biswanath Nag, secretary of ATTSA Demow Branch; Rajkishore Bhumij, president of ATTSA Sivasagar District Committee; leaders of ATTSA Demow branch and Athabari sub-branch; Stephen Chaura of ACMS; Gauranga Chaura; and local people.
