NAGAON, Sept 9: A multi-stakeholder consultation programme on ‘Ending Child Marriage and Reducing Teenage Pregnancy to Zero’ was held on Monday in the conference hall of the District Commissioner’s Office, Nagaon.
The event was chaired by Kakumoni Saikia, additional district commissioner and in charge of Women and Child Development, Nagaon. The welcome address was delivered by Bhola Nath Pegu, district social welfare officer, Nagaon, followed by a keynote address from the additional district commissioner. In her speech, Saikia urged the relevant departments to intensify efforts to end child marriage and reduce teenage pregnancy. She also directed the departments to train Gaon Panchayat secretaries, as they are designated as child marriage probation officers at the village level.
Ashis Sarkar, technical consultant (UNICEF) attached to the WCD Department, Assam, gave a presentation on the background and objectives of the consultation. An open house session was held, allowing dignitaries to share their views and suggestions. The session concluded with the identification of key action points and a tentative timeline for developing a district action plan.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Queen Borah, district programme coordinator (i/c), DMC, DHEW, Nagaon, according to an official press note.
