Jagannath Sharma, a renowned social worker in the greater Gogamukh area, a litterateur, musician, music composer, poet, and lyricist, was born in March 1936. He played a vital role in the overall development of the Gogamukh area through his exemplary social work. Initially, he worked in the PWD Department but later left his job due to his keen interest in social service, which has had ripple effects on modern-day society in Gogamukh. He was well-versed in Assamese and Nepali languages. He has numerous books and music albums to his credit. His books include ‘Purano Jamana, Naya Samjhana’ (a poetry collection), ‘Nari Kala’ (a poetry book), and ‘Prarambha’ (an album). The album is a collection of Nepali songs composed by him and sung by prominent singers from India and Nepal, including Kunal Ganjwala, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam, Kumar Sanu, Ramkrishna Dhakal, Kunti Muktan, Debajit Saha, Jit Kashyap, Sindhu Malla, and Dhiraj Newar, among others.

It was his vision, along with his eldest daughter Bhawani Devi, to establish a school in Gogamukh, which led to the founding of Suvidya Senior Secondary School. He actively supervised the school’s functioning until his demise. Despite his profound knowledge and vast contributions to society, he led a simple life and helped anyone in need. He was a strict disciplinarian and a caring guardian. On October 28, 2024, he departed for his heavenly abode, leaving behind six well-established daughters; his son, Bhim Prasad Sarmah; his daughter-in-law, Gauri Sharma; four grandsons and eight granddaughters, all with prolific careers; and a host of relatives and well-wishers in deep grief. Today, on the occasion of the adhyashradha, I pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul.
