TEZPUR, Nov 13: The Indian Medical Association, Assam State Branch, strongly condemns the brutal attack on Chennai-based oncologist Dr Balaji Jaganathan. Expressing their deep anguish, Dr Arunima Goswami, president, and Dr Atul Kumar Kalita, secretary of IMA Assam State Branch, stated in a press release, “The medical profession in the country is stunned with disbelief. No amount of superficial damage control exercises by governments is going to make doctors work without fear.” On behalf of the organisation, the duo urged for strong deterrent legislation and exemplary punishment for the culprits. Demanding proactive safety measures for medical professionals, they further stated that the medical profession in the country is deeply disturbed and skeptical of the remedial measures for this recurring menace of violence. “Only a comprehensive overhaul of the security atmosphere in hospitals could restore doctors’ confidence,” the duo added.
