MARGHERITA, March 12: Tensions escalated in Margherita following the mob assault on Dr Selix Alom, gynecologist of Margherita FRU Hospital, who was severely beaten by members of an organisation including the family members of the victim on February 22.

The attack stemmed from serious allegations, including sexual assault under false pretenses, beef consumption and attempts at religious conversion as Dr Selix Alom, who sustained severe injuries, is currently in judicial custody.

In response, several socio-cultural and women’s organisations, led by Margherita Regional Student Unit of AASU have condemned the assault, asserting that mob justice is unacceptable.

On Wednesday they submitted a memorandum to Margherita co-district commissioner demanding legal action against those involved in the attack.

Abhishek Baruah and Mriganka Chutia president and general secretary of Margherita Regional Student Union said that Dr Selix Alom, gynecologist of Margherita FRU on the day of February 22 was brutally assaulted through moral policing in front of the gate of Margherita FRU by members of an organisations including family members of the victim, which is totally unconstitutional and against the law as no one has the right to take law in his own hand.

“We appeal to Margherita Co-District Commissioner to take strict action against those people who were involved in the moral policing of Dr Selix Alom,” a release quoted them as saying.

The protesting organisations emphasised that due legal process must be followed, stating that while appropriate action should be taken if the doctor is found guilty, lawlessness cannot be justified.

They have further warned of widespread protests if authorities fail to act against those responsible for the mob violence.
