NAGAON, March 27: The Assam Human Rights Commission has initiated an inquiry against Nagaon Medical College Hospital and Kapili Nursing Home following a complaint filed by Dr Surajit Bhagawati, a professor at Nowgong College (Autonomous).
Dr Bhagawati alleged that his daughter, Angana Bharadwaj, died due to the negligence and lack of proper treatment at the two medical institutions.
On December 16, last year, Dr Bhagawati took his unconscious daughter to Kapili Nursing Home, where the doctor on duty advised him to take her to Nagaon Medical College Hospital, citing lack of facilities.
At the medical college hospital, Dr Bhagawati found no doctors or nurses on duty, except a security guard, who informed him that the doctors would arrive at 8:30 am.
Dr Bhagawati alleged that his daughter died due to delay and negligence.
He filed a complaint with the Assam Human Rights Commission on February 18, this year, alleging medical negligence and lack of proper treatment at the two institutions.
The commission has ordered an inquiry into the matter, directing the Nagaon District Magistrate to conduct an investigation through a senior judicial magistrate.
Dr Bhagawati appealed to the government to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents of medical negligence in the future, so that no parent has to suffer the loss of their child due to such negligence.
