KOKRAJHAR, April 27: In a landmark development recognising the legacy of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has approved the naming of a prominent road in New Delhi as “Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg.”
The road, spanning from A5 to A18 in Kailash Colony, will be formally inaugurated on May 1, coinciding with the 35th death anniversary of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma. This milestone fulfills a commitment made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
The announcement dates back to March 16, when Amit Shah addressed the 57th Annual Conference of the ABSU at Bodofa Fwthar in Dotma, Kokrajhar district. During his speech, Shah praised ABSU for its crucial role in fostering peace and development in Bodoland and paid homage at Brahma’s birthplace, saying, “Today, I stand at the birthplace of Bodofa UN Brahma, and I pay my respects.”
Speaking to this Correspondent, ABSU President Dipen Boro confirmed that the inauguration ceremony will be attended by several eminent leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bodoland Territorial Region Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, and other dignitaries from the Bodoland region.
The dedication of “Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg” stands as a powerful symbol of recognition for Brahma’s contribution towards unity, peace, and progress among the Bodo and other communities in Assam. As an additional tribute, a bust of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma will also be installed in Delhi in early May, in a ceremony to be graced by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Welcoming the decision, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude via social media:
“My sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Union Home Minister Amit Shah for taking forward the proposal of naming a road in the heart of Delhi as Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg. It is a commendable initiative by the Government of India.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to the martyrs who paved the way for peace in Bodoland, highlighting how the region has transformed from decades of unrest to a beacon of reconciliation and development.
CEM Pramod Boro expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Union government and praised the initiative:
“We welcome the noble step initiated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Government of India for naming the Marg after Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma in the national capital. This road will forever honor our revered and beloved Bodofa in the heart of our nation.”
This move not only honors the memory of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, widely revered as the Father of the Bodos, but also marks a growing national acknowledgment of the cultural and historical contributions of the Bodo community.
