KOKRAJHAR, May 16: In a landmark development for Bodo-medium education, the Government of Assam has approved the upgrade of 25 Middle English (ME) schools into Model High Schools across the state. This major initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Primary and Secondary Education, aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of education for students studying in the Bodo medium.
The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu at Janata Bhawan on Wednesday. The meeting reviewed the progress and implementation of key schemes under the 2025–26 budget of the education department.
Key topics included in the meeting’s agenda were: Distribution of bicycles to Class 9 students, free admissions for school students, infrastructure and academic quality in upgraded higher secondary schools, promotion of Bodo-medium ME schools, and policies regarding tutor wages, teacher upgrades, and headmaster/principal selection processes.
Minister Pegu emphasised the importance of timely and effective execution of educational reforms, particularly in underserved and minority-dominated regions.
The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has hailed the announcement, calling it a long-awaited milestone. ABSU President Dipen Boro expressed gratitude to the state government and Minister Pegu, saying “We are pleased to hear that 25 schools have officially been designated as Bodo Medium Model Schools, similar to Tea Garden Model Schools. This is a major step following proposals submitted by ABSU and the Bodo Sahitya Sabha to establish 35 such schools.”
He further extended heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma adding, “This initiative will immensely benefit Bodo students and strengthen the educational foundation of our community. It also fulfills a long-standing demand of over a decade. We look forward to the establishment of the remaining proposed schools.”The move is seen as a boost to Bodo-medium education, paving the way for better academic infrastructure, teaching resources, and student outcomes in the region.
