NAGAON, June 26: The Nagaon police on Thursday arrested two individuals from the Panikhaiti area for allegedly impersonating close associates of police officials and extorting money from the public.
According to an sources, the arrested individuals have been identified as Baputi alias Rekib Ahmed and Riaz Ahmed.
The duo had been posing as persons with strong links to the police and were reportedly collecting money from unsuspecting people by promising help in legal matters.
A case (No. 492/25) has been registered against them, and both accused have been sent to jail. Police said the arrests serve as a warning to those attempting to exploit public trust by falsely claiming influence.
