MAGO/ TAWANG, July 30: A coordination meeting and tourism awareness programme was held at Mago village on Wednesday to promote responsible tourism and community-led development ahead of the proposed Shangrila Calling Tourism Festival.
According to an official statement, the programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Tawang Namgyal Angmo and attended by Superintendent of Police Dr DW Thongon, ADC Jang Hakraso Kri, EAC Mago Thingbu Thutan Wangchu, senior officers of the Indian Army deployed in the sector, the commandants of the 4th Battalion ITBP and NIMAS Dirang, as well as officials of various work departments from Tawang and Jang.
PRI leaders and residents of Mago village also participated in the event.
The meeting featured inputs from tour operators such as Shangrila Calling, La-Kora, Kes-Kar Homestay, and local guides, who encouraged villagers to take up responsible tourism.
They praised government schemes that support self-employment and stated that tourism, when pursued with sincerity, can be more lucrative than government jobs.
Tenzin Tsamche, Tourism Information Officer of Tawang, informed participants about schemes and handholding support available for aspiring tourism entrepreneurs.
The session served as a motivational platform for local youth to engage in sustainable tourism.
During the discussions, SP Dr Thongon emphasised the need for well-equipped tourist accommodations and logistical support for police personnel during the upcoming festival.
In her address, DC Namgyal Angmo called for strong community participation to ensure that the tourism festival becomes a self-sustaining and locally driven initiative.
She encouraged inclusion of women entrepreneurs and self-help groups and urged organisers to finalise a theme while ensuring the event features traditional food, folk dances, and cultural performances to showcase the local heritage.
Mago Gram Chairperson Tsering Palden flagged concerns regarding the village’s poor power and telecom connectivity and urged authorities to resolve the issues promptly.
Following the meeting, the delegation led by the Deputy Commissioner visited the proposed festival site near Chuna to inspect preparations and review the layout.
The initiative marks a step forward in transforming Mago into a vibrant tourism destination powered by community enterprise.
