JORHAT, Aug 8: As part of the state-wide stir called by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to protest against the State Government’s decision to withdraw cases pending in Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs) against illegal Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants, the Jorhat district unit of the students’ body staged a demonstration here on Friday.
The protestors also burnt copies of the government directive on the withdrawal of cases against illegal Hindu Bangladeshi migrants.
Holding AASU flags, they shouted slogans against the government, demanding the revocation of the decision.
They alleged that the move was another step against the indigenous people of Assam following the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, terming it a blatant attempt to legitimise illegal immigration and a direct violation of the Assam Accord.
Describing the decision as a betrayal of the people of Assam, the protestors said that if it was not opposed, it would further endanger the culture, language and literature of the native population.
