ITANAGAR, Oct 13: Team Arunachal Pradesh emerged as the overall champion at the 4th Karate India Organisation (KIO) North East Zonal Karate Championship 2025, held at IG Park, Itanagar.
Assam and Meghalaya secured the first and second runners-up positions respectively.
The two-day event witnessed participation from around 720 athletes, coaches, team managers, and parents, representing seven northeastern states — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.
Athletes competed in 112 events across five categories during the tournament.
According to Doyak Singhi, Senior Vice President of the Arunachal Pradesh Amateur Karate-Do Association (APAKA) and Organising Committee Chairman, Team Arunachal Pradesh topped the medal tally with 56 gold, 38 silver, and 83 bronze medals.
Assam followed with 41 gold, 49 silver, and 68 bronze, while Meghalaya finished third with 12 gold, 12 silver, and 40 bronze.
Singhi said the championship concluded successfully without any issues, adding that enthusiastic support from local residents contributed to the event’s success.
“The people of Itanagar turned up in large numbers on both days to cheer for the athletes. We thank every citizen, parent, and supporter who encouraged the participants and helped make the tournament a success,” he said.
A Referee Seminar was also conducted by Hanshi Premjit Sen, Chairman of the Referee Commission, KIO, as part of the event to enhance the professional skills of officials.
The championship was organised by the Arunachal Pradesh Amateur Karate-Do Association (APAKA) under the leadership of President Yarda Niki, General Secretary John Bagang, Organising Chairman Doyak Singhi, and Organising Secretary Dr Marli Ete.
The tournament was inaugurated on October 11 by Kaling Moyong, President of the Arunachal Pradesh BJP, in the presence of Tarh Tarak, Member of the Arunachal Pradesh State Food Commission, as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Key KIO officials, including General Secretary Kyoshi Sanjeev Kumar Jangra and Treasurer Kyoshi Mutum Bankim Singh, attended the event.
The 4th KIO North East Zonal Championship concluded with the announcement that the next edition will be held in Meghalaya, while gold and silver medallists will represent the region at the national championship in New Delhi in December 2025.
