ITANAGAR, Oct 24: A series of suicide cases has created concern in Arunachal Pradesh, with police converting an earlier case of unnatural death (UD) into a regular case at Nirjuli Police Station under the State Capital Region.

This was informed by Naharlagun SP Dr Nyelam Nega.

According to the SP, police received information on Thursday morning regarding the death of a 19-year-old youth, identified as Gomchu Yekar, who was found dead in his rented room at Lekhi village where he was residing with his elder brother.

A UD case was initially registered, and police conducted on-spot examination and formal procedures.

However, around two hours later, a FIR was lodged by the deceased’s father, alleging abetment to suicide and naming two individuals.

The FIR was submitted along with handwritten suicide notes reportedly recovered from the room.

Based on the FIR and the Investigation Officer’s report, the UD case was converted into a regular case under relevant sections pertaining to abetment of suicide and other provisions, SP Dr Nega said.

Later, police received information from Tirap district that one of the individuals named in the suicide note, Executive Engineer Likwang Lowang, had also died by suicide on Friday night.

“We have incorporated the developments into the ongoing investigation,” the SP added.

Post-mortem of the deceased has been completed, and the family has been requested to take the body for last rites.

Police have seized the mobile phones of the deceased individuals and have requested forensic examination, including blood sample analysis.

“This is a sensitive case, and we will conduct a thorough and fair investigation,” SP Dr Nega said.

He confirmed that police have conducted raids at multiple locations and further enquiries are in progress. He clarified that as the case is cognizable, no arrest warrant is required at this stage.

As per earlier reports, the deceased youth, originally from Daporijo in Upper Subansiri district, had come to public attention in connection with a case relating to impersonation of a magistrate.

He had earlier been temporarily engaged to assist patrolling activities at Indira Gandhi Park.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the nature of the allegations made in the suicide notes and the mention of senior government officials.

Police have appealed to the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed as per law.
