DIPHU, Nov 25: In a major initiative to safeguard public health and animal welfare, Diphu Municipal Board in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Karbi Anglong has launched a large-scale Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) drive across the municipal area.
The first phase of the free vaccination and awareness campaign, themed ‘Protect your pets, Protect Your Community’, began on November 6, 2025, under the supervision of Dr Monica Tissopi, Veterinary Officer at the State Veterinary Dispensary, Diphu, with support from Dr Milton Engti, Mobile Veterinary Officer.
Dr David Bordoloi, District Nodal Officer for the Rabies Control Programme, Karbi Anglong said the drive is part of a nationwide effort following directives from the Supreme Court of India to curb rabies and manage stray dog populations. The campaign focuses on free vaccination, raising public awareness about dog vaccination and promoting responsible pet ownership.
Since the launch, over 216 dogs have been vaccinated, including both pets and strays. The drive will continue until all identified dogs within municipal limits receive their anti-rabies shots.
Looking ahead, authorities plan to implement Animal Birth Control (ABC) measures, including sterilisation through spaying and castration, to humanely manage stray dog populations. Additionally, educational programmes will be conducted in schools and public spaces to empower residents with knowledge about rabies prevention and responsible pet care. Residents are urged to cooperate with the veterinary teams and report any unvaccinated dogs stray or owned to ensure the success of the programme. Dr David Bordoloi has been appointed as the District Nodal Officer to oversee smooth execution of the vaccination campaign in Karbi Anglong.
