MARGHERITA, Dec 22: Members of the Bengali Parishad Asom, Margherita Regional Committee, on Monday evening staged a protest at NH-315 near the Margherita Auto Stand by burning an effigy of Bangladesh’s interim government chief adviser Mohammad Yunus, condemning the killing of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh.

The protest, organised by the Bengali Parishad Asom Margherita Regional Committee, witnessed participation of over 500 people from the Hindu Bengali community and other Hindu organisations.

Protesters raised slogans expressing anger over what they described as continued attacks on minorities in the neighbouring country.

Addressing the gathering, committee president Ashish Paul and general secretary Rajdeep Nandi said it was “painful and unfortunate” that members of the Hindu Bengali community, being a minority in Bangladesh, were allegedly facing violence, including murder, rape, land grabbing and forced conversion.

They urged the Bangladesh government to ensure the safety and dignity of Hindu minorities.

Bhim Karmakar, chief adviser of the Bengali Parishad Asom Tinsukia district committee, appealed to people of Assam to boycott products of Bangladeshi companies, including the brand “Pran”, as a form of peaceful protest.

He also called upon people to refrain from economic engagement as a means of expressing solidarity with persecuted minorities.

The protesters demanded adequate protection for Hindus residing in Bangladesh and warned that if the situation did not improve, larger agitation programmes would be launched across Assam and other parts of the country in the coming days.
