During the month, NFR unloaded 1,287 freight-carrying rakes across its jurisdiction, against 1,184 rakes handled in December 2024.

The zone ensured smooth and uninterrupted transportation of a wide range of essential and non-essential commodities, including FCI rice, sugar, salt, edible oil, foodgrains, fertilisers, cement, coal, vegetables, automobiles, tankers and other goods.

These consignments were handled efficiently at various goods sheds across the zone, ensuring timely supply and operational reliability.

A substantial portion of freight movement was dedicated to meeting the requirements of the northeastern states.

Assam alone accounted for the unloading of 689 rakes, of which 351 carried essential commodities, highlighting the critical role of the Railways in supporting public distribution systems and daily consumer needs.

During the same period, 106 rakes were unloaded in Tripura, 23 in Nagaland, nine in Arunachal Pradesh, 23 in Manipur, three in Meghalaya and 22 in Mizoram.

In addition, areas under NFR jurisdiction in West Bengal recorded unloading of 225 rakes, while Bihar accounted for 187 rakes, comprising both essential and non-essential commodities, thereby strengthening inter-regional supply chains.

Officials said the uninterrupted movement of essential commodities is vital for meeting daily requirements of the population, while the transportation of industrial and other goods plays a key role in supporting economic activity across the region.

Close monitoring at all operational levels and coordinated efforts by field units have helped reduce turnaround time and improve overall unloading efficiency.

The performance, NFR said, reaffirms its commitment to operational excellence, reliability and its pivotal role in driving socio-economic development across the Northeast and adjoining regions through efficient freight operations.
