MANGALDAI, Jan 24: The foundation stone for the reconstruction and upgradation of a 15-kilometre road connecting Naharbari to Namkhala under Sipajhar Assembly Constituency in Darrang district was laid on Friday. The project, estimated at approximately Rs 43.77 crore, is being implemented under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme for the financial year 2024-25.

The road forms a crucial segment of the Mangaldai-Majikuchi road and serves as an important link at the border area between Darrang and Udalguri districts. The formal inauguration ceremony was held in the afternoon at Deomornoi, where Darrang-Udalguri Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia performed the groundbreaking.

Addressing a public gathering at the Deomornoi Higher Secondary School premises, MP Saikia said that the BJP-led Central Government has consistently prioritised the overall development of the North East region and has been providing the necessary funds. He described the road construction project as a clear example of that commitment.

The MP expressed hope that the project would be completed within the next one and a half years. Once finished, it would address the long-standing transportation difficulties faced by people in remote areas.

The event was attended by Sipajhar MLA Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, officials from the executing agency, the Assam Government’s Public Works Roads Department, Mangaldai-Dalgawn-Sipajhar Territorial Circle and a large number of local residents.
