DIPHU, May 2: The Karbi Anglong District Administration has imposed stringent security measures ahead of the May 4 counting of votes for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections, enforcing prohibitory orders and declaring a district-wide dry day to maintain law and order.
Acting under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the District Magistrate has created a high-security zone within a 100-metre radius of the counting centre at Diphu Government College.
The restrictions will remain in force from the morning of May 4 until completion of the counting process.
According to the order, entry into the restricted zone will be permitted only to individuals carrying valid identity cards.
The use of mobile phones and other electronic devices—except by authorised personnel—has been banned.
Gathering of crowds, setting up temporary stalls, and parking of vehicles within the area have also been prohibited.
Additionally, bursting of firecrackers, use of loudspeakers, and holding of victory processions without prior permission have been strictly barred to prevent any disturbance during the counting process.
In a parallel move, the District Commissioner has declared May 4 as a “Dry Day” across Karbi Anglong. All wholesale liquor warehouses, IMFL retail outlets, bars, hotels, clubs and country spirit shops will remain closed until counting is completed.
Authorities have placed enforcement agencies on high alert and warned that any violation of the orders will attract strict penal action under the Assam Excise Act and other relevant laws.
The district administration described the measures as precautionary steps to ensure a peaceful and orderly counting process and urged political parties, candidates and the public to cooperate fully with the authorities.
