JORHAT, Sept 13: One person was apprehended by police from near the Pukhuria Army camp for reportedly trying to collect phone numbers from youths, who had come to appear in the Agniveer recruitment rally.

The person has been identified as Ranjan Bhuyan of Sadar, Mission Chariali, Tezpur.
Police sources said that the modus operandi of Ranjan Bhuyan was to collect the phone numbers by making a call from the phone of the youths to another number, on the plea that he had not been able to recharge his phone or charge it.
Police said that the local people on seeing his activity suspected that he was trying to initiate a ‘money for job’ scam and informed the police.
The police source further said that three more accomplices of Ranjan Bhuyan had fled from a lodge where they had put up, as soon as Ranjan Bhuyan was caught.
Bhuyan, himself, told newspersons that he had earlier gone to jail in 2016 in Tezpur in a case where he had been “similarly used as a scapegoat.”
He accused two brothers, Ashin Sharma, the mastermind and his elder brother, Amrit Sharma, who he said were using him to collect the phone numbers. He further said that he did not know why he had been asked to collect the numbers but that he had been promised Rs 10,000 for the purpose.
Bhuyan said that he and four others had camped at the lodge since September 9 and that one had left early on Tuesday.
